Earth Day April 22 2015 Thanks Dad!

My Dad, a US Army Veteran and great citizen, God rest his soul, used too say that we were taking too much oil out of the ground which was causing earthquakes and disrupting the earth.  I think he was right!  As I ponder that today, on April 22nd, which is the 45th anniversary of the launch of Earth Day, I think of my Dad.  He grew his own garden behind our home in a small town in New Jersey and I was eating organic vegetables every summer before I knew what organic was!  Whole foods that My Mom made from scratch like white beans, tomatoes with pasta and polenta were healthy, cost savvy staples that in today's trendy restaurants go for over $25 per plate! What a blessing I had for which I am very grateful!

This morning on Earth Day, I am scanning through my Dad's copy of Rachel Carson's classic book copy written in 1962, Silent Spring, which I kept from his Library.  Dad was an environmentalist before it was cool.  He even kept his own Bees.  Gardening and beekeeping were welcomed after dinner relaxing activities to him following a tough day running his company that he owned.  Rachel's book starts with Chapter 1, "A Fable for tomorrow."  It begins, "There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings..."

We all know today's news: The year 2014 ranks as Earth’s warmest since recordings started in 1880, according to two separate analyses by NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists.  Yet, I am still an optimist.  And I believe that even the smallest of activities of humankind add up and can make a difference.  So, for my part, I drive a hybrid.  I started keeping a mess kit in the car because I felt badly about stopping at Starbucks and Peets incurring multiple throwaways in one day, stopped the plastic shopping bag waste to landfill thanks to California legislation and have reduced my use of small plastic, disposable water bottles.  I am not perfect and we all have to be realistic, however, again, every little action can add up to greatness.  What are your contributions to assist Mother Earth in protecting us?

Energy Benchmarking

Know where your building stands on Energy Costs.  Do you know how your building stacks up against other buildings in your market?  If you own multiple buildings and are deciding on energy upgrades, where are your best opportunities for savings?  Our Energy Benchmark Service is a quick and easy way to assess the level of energy consumption and how it compares to similar buildings.  It is the first step down the path to increased profitability and asset value through lower operating costs.
Is your commercial building over 5,000 square feet? Contact us for help with California AB1103 disclosure requirements  http://www.energy.ca.gov/ab1103/

Let's Get Started!...

To prepare your report we will need some information about your property to get started, including:

·         Property Address
·         Weekly Operating Hours
·         Gross floor area that is heated and/or cooled
·         Indoor garage area (if any)
·         Number of Computers
·         Number of Works on Main Shift
·         Percent that can be Heated
·         Percent that can be Cooled
·         Area of lighted parking lot (if any).
·         Type(s) of building:  Office

Office refers to buildings used for the conduct of commercial or governmental business activities.  This includes administrative and professional offices.  Gross Floor Area should include all space within the building(s) including offices, conference rooms and auditoriums, kitchens used by staff, lobbies, fitness areas for staff, storage areas, stairways and elevator shafts.

We will also need energy utility billing data for at least 12 consecutive months. (The best way for us to get this is for you to give us access to your online account with your local utility. Next best is for you to provide us with a spreadsheet with the data, including: Month; kWh used; electric dollars; therms used; gas dollars. If more than one electric or gas meter, then include data for each meter. If using propane, oil, or another fuel, include the estimated monthly use.)

We will register you for a login in the Energy Star Portfolio Manager site with your new gmail account user name, set a temporary password that you can change later for your own updates and security. Later, we can help you easily forward emails from this account to  your preferred email.

Cleantech Forum SF at the beautiful Fairmont Nob Hill, March 2014

Cleantech is thriving!

The industry’s leading deal-making summit, the Cleantech Forum, now in its 12th year, put on a very strong event March 11-13, 2014 (Twitter #CFSF14) with over 1000 attendees and an impressive long roster of speakers at the beautiful San Francisco Nob Hill Landmark Hotel, The Fairmont.

We, at the Sustainability Silicon Valley Organization were very happy to join our colleagues to discover through this venue and its thought leaders, how we see an Accelerating System Change toward a Decentralized Future. Delegations from 22 countries were represented here. The Italians were encouraging Silicon Valley investors and leaders to visit them and see their innovations from a country with a long tradition in science and technology, going back to the Renaissance era of Leonardo daVinci and the Roman Era.  And the Japanese leaders were strongly sincere in their desire for more collaboration with the United States in their clean tech efforts and recovery from disasters with March 11th during this conference marking the third anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.  We heard from many of our world's innovation incubators.  Here in the U.S., California is striving to meet carbon emission reductions through the Global Warming Bill.  Some among many countries leading the clean tech charge were Israel with over 1000 clean tech companies, Sweden who will be home to the Cleantech European Forum in May, Hong Kong, Mainland China improving sustainable development and the Netherlands with cutting edge technology in water.  Also participating for international partnership were Canada, Korea, Holland, among others.

Congratulations to @HoneyCombCorp and @goeffortless, Entrepreneur Showcase judge's and people's winner, respectively!  Effortless Energy, Chicago, pays for smart home upgrades like better insulation and sealing air leaks, helping keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. HoneyComb is an Oregon-based company focused on drone based aerial imaging solutions for precision agriculture and forestry.
The impressive exhibitor and speaker list of the entire conference can be found here http://events.cleantech.com/sanfrancisco/

One of the largest breakout sessions was on Energy Storage on Tues. afternoon.  All who attended heard about ideas on how they could store their solar and other energy, then use this energy on demand to do peak shaving, demand response and save money at peak utility prices. One approach among over 50 in the industry was compressed air to create heat energy by Steve Crane, CEO of Light Sail Energy.  Everyone was inspired at this entire conference and speakers presented to a packed crowd of corporate executives, entrepreneurs and the sector’s most influential investors.

We can all envision a bright sustainable future to positively affect climate change with all of our collective efforts in an ever changing world, hopefully for the better.  At Sustainable Silicon Valley Org., our mission is to work together toward a healthy environment, a vibrant economy and a socially equitable community in Silicon Valley and throughout the world.  Please visit us at our Water Energy Smart Technology (WEST) Summit in October (details to be announced soon). where we will explore pioneering a green economy, the Need, the Opportunity and the Challenge!
