Industry Executives Predict a Growing Market for Energy Efficiency Solutions

A survey of utility executives conducted by Comverge to gauge their opinions on smart grid and energy efficiency issues revealed a widely-held expectation that budgets for energy efficiency resources will increase significantly in 2011. A full 92% of respondents indicated that they anticipate an increase in energy efficiency investments. Of all respondents 50% foresee a rise of 10%, 21% predict a rise of 11-20% and 21% expect an increase of 21-100% of current investment levels.

When asked what the most critical feature of a next generation energy management solution will be, the top three responses were support for open standards (35%), ability to measure and verify results (20%), and control and automation (19%).

Reflecting on Facebook

I just saw the Social Network and began reflecting on Facebook.

According to the latest press...
In just 7 yrs, Facebook now is valued at $50 billion, more than Nike.
Goldman Saks paid to own 1% of the valuation. Yet, in light of this valuation, it's free, has very little advertising and market researchers are some of the few paying for it.

What is very compelling is that Facebook is collecting more, unpecedented personal info on more than 600 million people. Certainly, it was a social force in world government upheavals like in Egypt and is truly a new viral marketing media virtual place, mobile and real time.

Access to all that info on consumers is where the real value lies, I think.
What about Privacy of its users? We have yet to see what will happen...

The economic backbone of Facebook is the ad placement with unprecedented accuracy.
Mark Zuckerberg has been named Man of the Year on Time Magazine.
It is said that Facebook has to be a permanent fixture on the internet and transform itself to a money making machine and start selling us. It may become unpopular with this coming price we will be faced to pay for Facebook.

Mmmmm...Facebook...will it be like AOL, Friendster and Myspace, invincible or a passing fad??

I think one problem with it for me is the overlap and redundancy...
You can follow people on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yahoo...etc.
You can write headlines on all, connect on all, share on all.

I'm already getting overspent on blogging vs. tweeting, vs. sharing on Facebook.
However, I keep LinkedIn for business use and Facebook for social, Twitter has
been taking a back seat for my tweets, but, it is a good
research tool for me. I really only want to share in one spot.

And, they are all great on mobile devices like my Blackberry Smartphone when I'm waiting for
flights at the airport and are twittering my fingers!

The Global population will reach 7 billion.
I don't think my Mom will be on it soon, she doesn't even use a computer; she loves to type on the old typewriter! And, I don't know if a tennis friend of mine will continue holding out to not be on Facebook while protecting their privacy?

I like it, but, it's raining now here where I'm online and if it weren't, I wouldn't
be on Facebook, I'd be outside enjoying the environment!

What's a yurt? According to Wikipedia, it's a "portable, felt-covered, wood lattice-framed dwelling structure." It's also where United States snowboarder Hannah Teter will be living when she returns home to Vermont.

The silver medalist told People magazine her plan:

"I will live in the yurt part time," Teter says. "Mom has [a] huge garden and fruit trees, and I love it there. I helped my parents get solar power this past year, and I'll be running on solar and hopefully wind power with my yurt so I can be completely off the grid."

Awesome.
Between her humanitarian efforts, giving all of her prize money to charity, her vegetarian lifestyle, and moving into a hut, Teter is clearly devoted to using her fame to make a difference. Her sponsor, Samsung, recently made a donation of $30,000 to her charity in honor of her silver medal in Vancouver. Between that donation and the proceeds and gift from the AMP energy quilt, Teter has raised more than $50,000 for her charity while in Vancouver. Oh, and she won a silver medal. Not a bad trip.

Even though she's going off the grid, we'll surely be hearing more about Hannah Teter in the future, both for snowboarding and something else great that she has done.

I've been reading the press and controversy and feel that the new Automated Metering Infrastructure is more precise than old meters, thus the higher bills. I think that consumers should have a communicator from vendors and utilities informing them prior to new smart meter installations. The best pitch here may be better efficiency and management, thus, reducing risk of brown/black outs on the electric grid rather than the promise of lower bills. And, for consumers, the ability to have future control of source buying and selling of energy with digital information on their computers.

Schwarzenegger Approves Solar Feed-In Tariff

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday signed into law a bill creating a feed-in tariff for small solar power systems between 1.5 and 3 megawatts (MW) in size, according to a Dow Jones report.

California utilities will be required to purchase power from these small-scale producers at set rates, that could be between 15 and 17 cents an hour, a level that some companies believe won't generate much investment in new solar, according to the report.

A separate feed-in tariff is currently under consideration by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). That program would require the state's three publicly owned utilities to purchase power from solar power systems between 1 MW and 20 MW in size. Developers of these systems would compete in reverse auctions to set the purchase price, and the entire program would be capped at 1,000MW of solar capacity.

Schwarzenegger reportedly sent a letter to the State Senate stating that the CPUC should proceed with its program, because the state will need "all of the tools available" to meet its renewable energy goals.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in July established its own feed-in tariff, and Ben Block of the World Watch Institute wrote in August that North America is at the tipping point in recognizing the effectiveness of these programs for incentivizing renewable energy development.

First All Mountain Ski Day at Squaw Valley!

Dear Silicon Valley Ski Friends,

I hope you are getting ready for some away time to the high sierras after handling the Economy, Silicon Valley and all your daily activities! It's a winter wonderland here...I'm writing you from Truckee, CA. I skied at Squaw Valley today with my Truckee neighbors, the first day the upper mountain opened, after the storm of the last few days which brought over 3 feet of new snow! The Funitel, Tram and many lifts, about 12, including Shirley Lake are all open. Expert Granite Chief and Solitude have, yet, to open, probably after the next storms that will arrive tomorrow afternoon. Coverage is great.

Here is a list that may help you get ready for your first ski day...
1. I learned that it's good to use summer wax when you put your skis away at the end of the season. Mine were very dry and I stopped at the Squaw Ski Shop in the Village to get some quick $5 hot wax. The snow is very dry...not wet Sierra Cement at all. The wax really helps you out there.
2. I was lucky to get a free day pass today! I stood in a line at Special tickets, near the TRAM, to get my resident $5 weekday card which will get me discounts all season on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. BTW, anyone can get this card, they don't ask for ID. And, because they didn't have it available, yet, I got a comp, since I waited so long...good service.
3. Squaw has a NEW lift ticket system! No more wires and sticky tickets to put on your clothing. Everything is electronic now...put your magnetic pass, the size of a business card, in your pocket and pass through the installed turnstiles at the Funitel without taking it out. No need to stop for a paper punch. Just be sure you don't put your pass in the same pocket as your cell phone because it can get de-magnetized. This really speeds things up.
4. Remember to keep your ski boots and clothes in a warm place the night before. My toes were cold and I had a difficult time getting my boots on for the first time this season. So, I stopped at the Olympic House and used their electric heat warmers for just 25 cents! That worked and I enjoyed the rest of my day comfortably.
5. The guys at Surefoot at the end of the Village near the convention center parking lot are great, especially Tim and his nice dog, a friendly Rottweiler. They helped me make my boots more comfortable. They offer orthotics for your ski boot foot beds, probably a good investment...I'm thinking about it.
6. A new restaurant is going in where Balboa Cafe left across from ticket sales and near Starbucks in the village. "22" is a fancy bistro, named for the famed KT22 lift. It will be quite elegant I heard from the ski instructors.

Well, hope you get to come up. I love Squaw :-)! Northstar is good skiing, too, but, not convenient. It's nice to be able to just walk to a close lift or Funitel right from the parking lot at Squaw and be at the summit within minutes. I timed my trip to the summit at Northstar last season and it took over 30 minutes, with parking, getting on the shuttle, walking and going up stairs to the gondola, then taking 2 more lifts to get to the top. :(

Last recommendation, if you can make it, weekday skiing is the best for getting around all the terrain easier. Fridays are nice, then, you can catch the night life part of the weekend.
And, make a stop to Bar of America at the Truckee Railroad crossing in Old Town for live music, good food, libations and a happy hour. This is a hangout and weekend watering hold for locals and visitors alike!

Have you checked your website's Traffic Rankings on Alexa.com, yet? If your rankings don't appear, then you haven't registered with the top Search Engines. You need not use any expensive services to do this and your web site manager can do this for you. Or, you can do it yourself, since you only need to register with 3 search engines that handle about 80% of all searches. Can you guess who they are?? Google, of course, handles about 50% of those searches; Yahoo and MSN handle the rest. Nowadays, we all go to the web for information. A well done website, that is easy to navigate, has a hook to invite you through the front door, rooms of content to make you want to keep browsing and a great offer to make you take action, will be your best marketing vehicle, I promise. I have customers that have saved a lot of money, by cancelling all other marketing expenditures, except for their websites which generate all their sales leads!
